Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz are ready to shoot Escobar
Story of drug lord Pablo Escobar has inspired many books, films, series and even video games. Although it makes part of Colombian past, international entertainment industry struggles to keep his memory alive.
Recently, we have watched his life in movies like Escobar: Paradise Lost (with Benicio del Toro as the drug trafficker) and Narcos, a Netflix original television series starring Brazilian actor Wagner Moura as Pablo.
Now, we prepare to another adaptation that is directed and written by Spanish director Fernando León Aranoa and is based on novel “Loving Pablo, Hating Escobar” that was first published in 2007 by writer and journalist Virginia Vallejo.
Vallejo opens her heart in this unconventional love story book telling how she met Escobar in 1982, how she felt in love and how she finished being a key witness in two legal processes that were crucial for Colombian history: The Palace of Justice siege (1985) and the Assassination of liberal politician Luis Carlos Galán (1989).
In the middle of her love story with Escobar, that finished in 1987 according her own information, she tells about the man who spread terror in Colombia, his connection with some Heads of State, militaries, guerrillas and politicians (like Ernesto Samper, Álvaro Uribe and Alfonso López Michelsen). In general, all from his rise to a privileged and illegal position of power to his fall when he was shot by police that December 2, 1993.
Shooting of Escobar will star next October 24th in Medellin, Colombia. Javier Bardem will be the lord of drug meanwhile Penélope Cruz will be Virgina Vallejo, who has said in her website that book will be translated to English-Language and published next year.
Escobar is a co-production between Spain and Bulgaria where is linked production companies Escobar Films by Miguel Menéndez de Zubillaga, B2Y by Kalina Kottas and the same Bardem. Precisely, the co-producer Zubillaga has said that this is the perfect story for any producer.
Javier and Penélope after got married have worked together in movies “Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona” directed by Woody Allen and “The Counselor” by Ridley Scott. The crew for Escobar includes cinematographer Alex Catalán (La Isla Mínima), costumer designer Loles García Galeán and artistic director Alaín Bainée (The machinist).
